Successful NDIS Application – What’s Next

Your NDIS application was successful – What next?

Preparing for your planning meeting

“Learn to think beyond the money you think you’ll need, think yes I’ve got these impairments so I’ll need these supports to live out my dreams. Think about what are the most important things that I want to work on in my life right now” – Cath (she/her), Cath is blind.

Once you are approved to use the NDIS, you become what is called a participant.

  • When you become an NDIS participant, you will be put on a plan. Usually a plan lasts for the next 12 months after it has been approved.
  • What goes in your plan will be worked out between you and your plan manager during a planning meeting.
  • The NDIS aims to help you meet your goals. What are the things you would like to achieve in the next 12 months, and what equipment and/or supports can help you to achieve them? These supports could be specific support to assist you in achieving your goals, or assistance with the tasks of daily living so that you can focus on what’s important to you.

“When I first accessed the NDIS I didn’t realise how many ways I could use that funding. I was just like, ‘I need a wheelchair’. Having my NDIS plan and learning how to use it has meant that I could find supports I didn’t even know I needed. – Robin (they/them), is a multiply disabled wheelchair user.

“My funding covers support I might need as a person who’s blind. This includes software on my computer that means I have access to the screen, it reads out to me in speech what’s on the screen. I also have a braille computer. If I need help learning new places, like moving to a new house, I do work with orientation and mobility instructors.” – Cath (she/her), Cath is blind.

“I have someone who helps around the house, with odd jobs, the dishes, but he also helps me with my uni work and computer stuff, goes shopping with me – all those things might not seem like a lot, but they’re foundational for me to go on and do other things.” – Debbie (she/her) lives with a psychosocial disability.

First Nations Listening and Truth Telling Project Consultant

ACON is currently seeking a consultant with experience (lived and professional) in working with LGBTQ+SB First Nations communities to lead ACON’s First Nations Listening and Truth Telling Project.

The project seeks to strengthen dialogue, promote collaboration, and inform the development of ACON’s programs and services for LGBTQ+ Sistergirl and Brotherboy Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities in NSW.

The aim is for ACON to conduct, and participate in, a community listening and truth telling process across NSW to better inform ACON of the health needs and priorities of LGBTQ+SB Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people so we can better serve these communities. The outcomes of the project will inform decisions about appropriate governance structures to strengthen strategic directions in the delivery of programs and services for LGBTQ+SB Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities across the state.

Description of the tender for consultants interested in the Project:

The project will consist of two separate phases, and applicants are invited to submit an EOI for one, or both phases, depending on their professional and lived experience:

Phase 1 will involve the conducting of a listening and truth telling process designed to enable meaningful listening, including the convening and hosting of community meetings across NSW, aimed at improving ACON’s understanding of the key health priorities of LGBTQ+SB Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, including any who may be living with HIV.

Phase 2 will include the hosting of strategic meetings across the sector with experts, researchers, funders, and other relevant stakeholders aimed at engaging ACON, and the sector more broadly, with the issues raised in the initial phase, and facilitating discussion on strategies to address them.

ACON welcomes any interested applicant to propose a unique approach to the process of each phase, as we understand the journey through a listening and truth telling process must be driven by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander design. We welcome innovative approaches, and we encourage interested applicants to engage with us to discuss their ideas.

How to apply:

If you are a prospective applicant, please first register your potential interest by sending an email to policy@acon.org.au to briefly introduce yourself to us, regardless of whether you go on to submit a full expression of interest or not, by Monday 8 July 2024. Include a brief overview of your experience. We want to know who you are, even if you don’t end up putting in and EOI.

Then, when you’re ready to submit a completed expression of interest, follow the instructions here and submit all documents to policy@acon.org.au.

The deadline for submitting a completed expression of interest is COB Monday 5 August 2024.

Alcohol And Cancer Risk

We all know that in our LGBTQ+ communities, enjoying a few drinks can be part of the scene. It can often feel like alcohol is intertwined within the rainbow communities’ fabric.

But here’s the thing – sometimes we might be sipping more than we realise. LGBTQ+ people tend to drink more alcohol than the rest of the population, which can put us at greater risk of alcohol-related cancers and other health issues.

Together, we can make mindful choices about how we enjoy our drinks and find a better balance in our relationship with alcohol.
